RARE BEAT - GARAGE ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC
THE SHADOWS OF KNIGHT

The Shadows of Knight were a legendary 1960's American rock band from the Chicago suburbs, who played a form of British blues mixed with influences from their native city (see Chicago blues). The Shadows of Knight have been derisively labeled a "garage band" by many critics. The original Shadows of Knight were talented, professional musicians whose impact upon rock music has been felt for a generation. After performing in and around Chicago's northwest suburbs in 1964 and 1965, the Shadows of Knight became the house band at the legendary "Cellar", a teen club in Arlington Heights, Illinois. A stellar performance in support of The Byrds at Chicago's McCormick Place in early summer 1965 attracted the attention of Dunwich Records producers Bill Traut & George Badonski. During that show they performed "Gloria" by Them, an early Van Morrison group. The band signed with Dunwich shortly thereafter and recorded "Gloria" as a first effort. After its December 1965 release, "Gloria" received massive regional airplay. They soon released the "Gloria" LP, unfortunately, none of these tracks came near their initial commercial success. Failure to find the right follow up to "Gloria" handicapped the band's earning power and led to its disintegration. By mid-1967 the only original member of the Shadows of Knight remaining was vocalist Jim Sohns, who, through simple default, inherited the band's name and its legacy. Many find this ironic, as Sohns is considered by most critics to have been by far the weakest member of the original group talent-wise.
